THE GILMORE GIRLS EFFECT

The habitual town of Stars Hollow has become the home in all of our hearts as we watch Rory and Lorelai consume gallons of coffee at Luke’s, brace through Taylor’s tenacious attempts to prolong the iconic town hall meetings and pass Gypsy endlessly repairing the town’s cars (usually Jess’s). It seems as if all us Gilmore Girls fanatics have grown up with the two Lorelai's throughout the seven series phenomenon. While Gilmore Girls gave us the heart-warming tale of a mother and a daughter growing up together in a small town in Connecticut, it also brought us the appropriate, yet amusing pop culture references…

1. Paul Anka the dog

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog became Lorelai's companion in season 6. She names the dog Paul Anka after the Canadian 50s singer, taking ‘puppy love’ to a whole different level. However, nothing could prepare us for the guest star appearance of Paul Anka (the human) in ‘The Real Paul Anka’ eighteenth episode where the singer appears in Lorelai's dream as one of the shop workers in Doose’s Market and then acting as a dog on Babette’s lap! Paul Anka and Gilmore Girls? Iconic.

2. Did anyone ever think Sylvia Plath wasn’t crazy, she was just cold?

Sylvia Plath gets a regular mention in Gilmore Girls as we see Rory read her books, references from ‘The Bell Jar’ and Lorelai's witty insights into Plath’s suicide.

3. The Bangles Concert
Season 1 shows Rory, Lorelai, Sookie, Paris, Madeleine and Louise at The Bangles’ concert where Lorelai quizzes Sookie on Luke’s girlfriend in the worst seats in the venue, while Rory’s Chilton friends depart the gig halfway through. However, we got to see a snippet of the real Bangles perform many songs alongside ‘Eternal Flame’ which was one of the best scenes in Gilmore Girl’s history!!

4. We Got Us a Pippi Virgin!

It was no secret that Rory and Lorelai were immense Pippi Longstocking fans as they recited the entire theme song to the 1969 children's classic.

5. I’m not feeling very John Cleese Now!

Dean references 'The Ministry of Silly Walks' Monty Python sketch as he leaves Rory after another Jess brawl.

6. Duck Soup

Rory and Marty are obsessed with the 1933 Marx Brother's movie 'Duck Soup' when they're not watching reruns of  'I Love Lucy'.

7. Say Goodbye To Daisy Miller

Rory references Henry James famous novel 'Daisy Miller' during a fight.

8. The Dead Kennedys' Shirt

One of my favourite scenes as a HUGE Adam Brody fan but also because of Lane Kim's fight for independence as she hides her Californian punk band T-Shirt from her highly religious antique shop owner mother Mrs Kim.

9. Daniel Day Lewis

Lorelai references Oscar Winning writer and artist Daniel Day Lewis as Rory looks for her Harvard acceptance letter.

10. Neil Young is cool!

Not only is Gilmore Girls the best show on the planet due to the abundance of Nancy Walker Impressions but also the references to Neil Young. Neil Young is the best artist to ever walk on this earth and of course he's referenced more than twice on the show.
By (biggest Gilmore Girls fan) Holly Turner.
